Plavaie

An old Moldavian variety producing light, vibrant white wines distinguished by freshness, delicate fruit and lively acidity

White Indigenous 139 ha

Plavaie is an ancient Romanian grape variety historically associated with the vineyards of Moldova, particularly those of the southern part of the region.

Traditionally used for fresh dry whites, it can also produce sparkling wines and wines destined for distillation. Its naturally lively acidity and delicate fruit give Plavaie an unmistakably refreshing character.

THE GRAPE

Plavaie in Romania

Today, approximately 139 hectares of Romanian vineyards are planted with Plavaie. The variety is concentrated primarily around Odobesti, with smaller plantings in Panciu and Cotesti, three historic wine-growing areas of Moldova.

The moderate continental conditions of the region are well suited to the variety. Warm days encourage ripening, while cooler nights help preserve natural acidity and the fresh, delicate aromas that define the character of Plavaie.

The wines are generally light-bodied and lively, with refreshing acidity and aromas of orchard fruit, flowers and subtle mineral notes. Green apple, pear and delicate blossom are among the expressions commonly associated with the variety.

This fresh profile makes Plavaie particularly versatile at the table, pairing naturally with seafood, fresh cheeses and lighter dishes. Its acidity also makes it suitable for sparkling wine production, another traditional expression of the grape.

Although its vineyard area is relatively small today, Plavaie remains part of Romania's valuable indigenous viticultural heritage. Among the producers keeping the variety visible in contemporary Romanian wine is Girboiu Winery.
