Rhein Riesling is cultivated on approximately 494 hectares in Romania. Although its total vineyard area is relatively modest, the variety is planted in several important wine-growing regions, where differences in altitude, climate and soil produce distinctly different styles.

Important areas include Tarnave, Dealu Mare, Cotnari and the vineyards around Iasi.

The cooler conditions and higher-altitude vineyards of Tarnave favour wines with lively acidity, floral aromas and excellent freshness. In Dealu Mare, the warmer climate can produce fuller expressions with ripe citrus and stone-fruit character while retaining the variety's characteristic acidity.

In Moldova, including Cotnari and Iasi, Rhein Riesling can produce both dry and sweeter styles with pronounced fruit and mineral nuances. Across Romania, the best examples combine freshness, aromatic clarity and the capacity to develop greater complexity with bottle age.
