Busuioaca de Bohotin is cultivated on approximately 688 hectares in Romania. Although its historic identity is firmly connected with Moldova, the variety is now found in several important Romanian wine-growing areas.

Plantings are found around Bohotin and in vineyards such as Husi, Iasi, Cotnari and Cotesti. It is also cultivated further south, including in the Dealu Mare area.

In Husi, Busuioaca de Bohotin can produce bright, elegant rosé wines with vivid strawberry fruit, floral perfume and characteristic basil-like nuances, supported by refreshing acidity. This freshness is important in balancing the naturally expressive aromatic profile of the grape.

Around Iasi, the wines can show deeper colour and more pronounced red-fruit character, often with raspberry and redcurrant notes. These richer expressions demonstrate the variety's ability to respond strongly to differences in terroir and ripeness.

In Pietroasa, within the Dealu Mare wine-growing area, Busuioaca de Bohotin can take on a different personality, with salmon or deeper rosé shades and a complex aromatic combination of roses, ripe red fruit and herbal spice.

Whether vinified dry, off-dry or sweet, Busuioaca de Bohotin remains one of the most unmistakable expressions of Romanian viticulture. Its combination of perfume, freshness and unusual flavour makes it a genuinely distinctive indigenous variety.
